The NIHS PhD programme has given me the opportunity to work at the crossroad between academia and industry
In 2012, NIHS created its first PhD Student Programme, and since then, we’ve had several students who’ve graduated. This programme plays an integral role towards our commitment to support young people in their transition towards professional life, for which Nestlé has a range of initiatives, including our recent Global Youth Initiative. Those who take part receive a doctoral programme of the highest quality, allowing Nestlé to build a pipeline of emerging talents, contributing to their education and raising the standards of science ever higher.
Through this programme, NIHS gives PhD students an opportunity to gain high-quality research experience in an interdisciplinary environment surrounded by state-of-the-art facilities and professional guidance and supervision. It also strengthens interactions between NIHS and selected universities which are of key interest for Nestlé Research. Currently, we have 10 PhD students in our programme, and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Technische Universität München (TUM) as the universities which are part of our PhD programmes.
We’re currently looking for motivated, talented students to become involved in research projects covering areas such as cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, pharmacology, physiology, metabolism, computational biology, computer science, nutrition and many more. PhD Project 1: Deciphering the heterogeneity of skeletal muscle stem cell fate and metabolism during regeneration and aging.
This project aims at discovering novel subpopulations of muscle stem cells using single cell transcriptomics and novel in vivo models that track stemness and commitment. The functional role of these subpopulations will also be investigated in the context of aging to derive therapeutic interventions on their metabolic and signaling pathways, with the long-term goal to prevent muscle wasting and restore the regenerative capacity of aged skeletal muscle.
PhD Project 2: Unlocking the master metabolic switch AMP-activated protein kinase
The AMPK-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a major regulator of cellular energy homeostasis and is a key drug target for metabolic disorders and cancer. The goal of this project is to identify novel molecular mechanisms by which AMPK is regulated in control of metabolic pathways for future discovery of natural bioactives aiming at combating metabolic health benefits.
